September 2020 - Message from our President
A great story can do so much more than just serve as a vehicle for the exchange of information— it can also move us and, in that space where emotion colours our world, serve to bring us closer together. It’s one of the reasons why, in my work, I try to find the real world examples of people and challenges that can help connect an audience to a collective purpose or outcome.
Given their power, it’s no wonder why professional communicators go to great lengths to find and craft stories that reinforce desired behaviour or efficiently convey complex concepts and ideas. But how do we do it without coming across as soulless, corporate shills? After all, there’s nothing a cynic loves more than an organisation trying to sell its wares or ideas through the use of an inauthentic, or parochial, narrative (especially if it’s about organisational change).
Gabrielle Dolan is a highly sought-after international keynote speaker and educator on real communication and business storytelling and she’s also the presenter of IABC Wellington’s 17 September webinar. Gabrielle is an expert in the power of good business storytelling— she’s also IABC Asia-Pacific’s 2020 Communicator of the Year— and she’ll share with us important insights on business storytelling. You won’t want to miss out, so be sure to register today— and also don’t miss her more in-depth workshops.
I’m really proud of how hard the IABC Wellington board has worked to maintain an exceptional schedule of events for Aotearoa’s professional communicators, even while navigating the uncertainty created by COVID-19. They put in the hard yards because they know that, like a story can connect, so too can our organisation. IABC will continue to run our virtual events this month and next, but we will look to close out the year with another in-person mixer. (Yay!!!)
This year our sponsors Momentum, Isentia, Think Stills & Motion, and Capiche Design stepped in to make sure all of Aotearoa’s professional communicators had access to our virtual professional development events. They wanted to see our members, and the wider community, supported in challenging times. Our normally scheduled events will always be free for IABC members, but a charge will be reintroduced for non-members by the end of the year. If you’re not already a member, we will have discounted memberships available in October. Please reach out to me if you have any questions about joining IABC.
We will also host the Global Communications Certification Council’s Communications Management Professional (CMP) and Strategic Communications Management Professional (SCMP) exams on 14 October, between 9am - 12pm, at Momentum’s offices.
The CMP® is an ANSI-Accredited Personnel Certification Program - Accreditation #1259, proving prestige and value on an international scale. (The SCMP is expected to be accredited in 2021). The certifications are a great way to quickly demonstrate to employers that you hold the knowledge and skills— and ethical standards— to be a professional communicator anywhere in the world.
That’s it from me this month. I hope to see you all online or at our end of year mixer soon!
Nāku noa, nā
